Creative volunteering for creative people

Do you have a creative superpower you simply can't contain? Then this is the place for you. There is a rewarding volunteering role with the Super Power Agency for everyone. You don't need to be an amazing writer, you just need to believe in the power of words to change the world!

We work in over 35 schools across Scotland by creating literacy-centred writing experiences. We support teachers to engage young people in the curriculum in new and unexpected ways.

There is a place for everyone, we just have to discover your superpowers!

  • Writing Mentor

    Writing Mentor

This is where you can help directly with our young people in the classroom.

In most workshops you’ll be working with around four students. Your main task will be to support and gently ask questions as they write their pieces.

You don’t have to be a writer to be one of our writing mentors – you give young people superpowers through encouragement and enthusiasm. We won’t make you wear a cape, but you will definitely feel like a superhero.

  • E.L.E.P.H.A.N.T.

    E.L.E.P.H.A.N.T.

All of the work our young writers do is published into a book of some form.

If you’d like to be involved but find it difficult during typical school hours, then the Extraordinary League of Editors, Proofreaders, Helpers And Nifty Typists (E.L.E.P.H.A.N.T.) might be the editing collective for you! This is back-end remote volunteering, and is integral to publishing the young writers’ work.

The writing is split up into batches, each taking approximately one hour, and you are welcome to do as many or as few as your schedule allows!

  • Design Squad

    Design Squad

If you want to flex your creative muscles, you can help out with bringing our message to life.

All of the work our young writers do is published in a book. In order for the writing to be presented in the best possible way, our volunteers bring the stories to life by illustrating and designing the books.

If graphic design or communications are more your thing, we always need designers to help out with marketing materials, including flyers and posters.

  • Community Ambassador

    Community Ambassador

Help us build awareness and showcase our work.

We are a small staff team and therefore value the help of our volunteers at book launches, community fundraising events, book festivals and fairs.

Also, should you wish to run a fundraising initiative, please do get in touch and we will send our fundraising pack. Our community events generally run at the weekends, but some may be during the week.

    Volunteering FAQs

Got questions about volunteering for the Super Power Agency? Here are a few of the questions we get asked all the time...

    1. What if I don’t live in Scotland?
You can volunteer with us from all over the world! Our Writing Mentors need to be within easy reach of their preferred workshop, but our E.L.E.P.H.A.N.T., fundraising and design volunteers can live anywhere.
    2. What qualifications do I need?
Nothing specific! You will need a good level of spoken English and tonnes of enthusiasm.
    3. Will I receive any training?
Yes!! You will come along to our initial induction training and then you are welcome to join us throughout the year for our many optional CPD opportunities.
    4. Is there an age limit?
We require our volunteers to be over 18.
    5. Do you pay expenses?
No, we do not cover expenses.
    6. What is the time commitment?
It’s totally up to you! We don’t have a minimum requirement on hours – but we often find people love volunteering so much, they come into the classroom more than they first expect!
    7. Can I volunteer in more than one area?
Yes! Many of our volunteers help out both in the classroom and with our editing.
