Greetings from our new Board Chair, Valerie Lindsay

In 2016 I got a text from Maxine Sloss, founder of the Super Power Agency, asking me to watch the now famous video ‘Once upon a school’. For those who haven’t seen it, Dave Eggers outlines how a chance conversation brought a group of friends together to help tutor under resourced students in San Francisco.  His idea soon swept across America and has since been replicated globally. If you can spare 24 minutes of your life, it’s well worth watching — I was immediately hooked.

Five years on and I have just become chair of this incredible organisation. Our version of that Pirate Supply store/writing centre (go on, watch the video), has already worked with twelve schools, giving one on one time to over 2000 pupils, to make them more confident writers. As the quote above suggests, a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens, really have begun to change the world.

Currently, more than 300 volunteers, have given their time, attention and dedication to our cause, resulting in 17 books. Written by children who would normally never put pen to paper, 📝  these books are available here and in local independent bookshops…  These are works from the heart, produced over eight weeks, in the unfiltered words of their authors. Each book represents a journey and leaves everyone involved with a sense of achievement and lasting evidence of what’s possible.

At a time when education has suffered more than most, the work of the Super Power Agency has never been more relevant, or sadly necessary. This year our focus is on expansion.  We know our model works and we’re ready to share it across Scotland. Will you join us in changing the world?
